Hannah Schmitz, Red bull Racing F1 strategy

Hannah Schmitz’s story is one of relentless focus, technical brilliance, and a drive to succeed in a background field where few women were present. Born in England in 1985, Hannah excelled academically—ultimately graduating from the University of Cambridge with a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Her focus on optimization theory, data modelling, and statistical analysis laid the groundwork for what would become a career at the very heart of Red Bull Racing’s strategy team.

Hannah joined Red Bull in 2009 as a modeller and simulation engineer, contributing to the development of advanced simulation tools, analysing past performance metrics, and devising potential race scenarios. By 2011, she had moved into the live strategy team as Senior Strategy Engineer, where her role quickly became pivotal: making critical calls on tyre choices, pit-stop timing, and race tactics. Her ability to anticipate competitor moves and react under pressure quickly established her as one of the team’s most trusted decision-makers.

In 2021, Hannah was promoted to Principal Strategy Engineer, overseeing Red Bull’s strategic operations and playing a critical role in their championship successes. Her responsibilities extend across the pit wall and the operations centre: she must anticipate competitors' strategies, react to dynamic in-race developments, manage risk, and execute decisions with precision. Hannah emphasises that being adaptable and calm under pressure is just as important as technical skill, highlighting her ability to combine analytical expertise with emotional intelligence in high-pressure scenarios.

Beyond race strategy, Hannah has become a symbol of progress for women in motorsport, breaking barriers in a traditionally male-dominated environment. She has spoken about the challenges of establishing herself, gaining trust, and commanding authority while proving her competence under scrutiny. Her career trajectory demonstrates that talent, resilience, and determination can overcome structural obstacles, inspiring a new generation of women engineers to pursue high-level roles in Formula 1 and motorsport in general.

Today, Hannah Schmitz stands as one of the most influential technical figures in Formula 1. As Principal Strategy Engineer for Red Bull, she is integral to the team’s race-winning operations, designing strategies, managing data teams, and contributing directly to victories. Her story is not just one of professional accomplishment, but of breaking barriers, leading with expertise, and shaping the future of women in motorsport engineering.
